How Did I Get My Scar? Spotlight and Giveaway of the Children’s Book, Zip-Line

Zip Line

Zip-Line is a children’s book written for young boys and girls that had open heart surgery and are left with a “zip-line” – a large scar on their chest. Written and illustrated by the father of a baby girl who had open heart surgery at 6 months of age, this heart warming rhyme book whimsically explains the answer to the question “How did that line get there?”.

My daughter Ella had a 8+ hour open heart surgery at 6 months to repair her CHD.   While in the CICU, I started scribbling lines for a poem about how she got her scar. I wanted to have something to give to her when she got older to explain the larger than life line that I saw before me.  I wanted her to feel comfortable with it, and not embarrassed if kids stared.  Today Ella is 4 and is just full of life – not embarrassed by her scar, but not focused on it either.

The book is perfect for toddlers and preschool-aged children and will allow a safe discussion about their scar. It is also available in Spanish.
