Supporting Children with Coping Kits: Spotlight and Giveaway on Childhood Matters

I love coping kits! It’s a great way for children to feel validation and find healthy ways to express their emotions. Coping kits are also great gift ideas for families adapting to changes such as a new baby, illness, or loss of a loved one.

Childhood Matters is a small business that designs curated toolboxes to meet the needs of children navigating through major life events. The purpose of teaching mindfulness through this tool box is to give children skills to develop an awareness of their inner and outer experiences, to understand how emotions manifest in their bodies and to recognize when their attention has wandered, and to provide tools for control.

The grief box consists of tools to help a child, sibling, or parent grieve, cope, heal and grow. Through this toolkit, resources are provided for understanding the grieving process, coping with different kinds of loss, and how to provide age-specific support to children

Play is therapeutic for children and it helps a child transition from feeling upset or worried to a state of flow. Flow states occur when a child is deeply absorbed in play. This is when they discover new things, increase their exploration, and even work through stressors they may feel. This toolbox is especially helpful for a hospitalized child.

The self-identity/diversity toolbox was designed to help support the development of a strong sense of self and help children learn about diversity and inclusion. It strives to cultivate compassion and kindness towards one’s self and others

The Nature toolbox was designed to encourage children to be outdoors, connect with nature, and have a greater appreciation for the environment. Nature therapy reduces children’s stress levels and enhances their health and mental performance

The Childhood Matter’s Wellness Toolbox was created as a tool to support parents or other caregivers in helping their children manage the medical experience. This coping tool was developed to increase positive coping strategies utilizing evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral coping techniques (e.g., relaxation, play, social support seeking).

The sensory toolbox holds a variety of sensory and distraction activities that can be used to both calm and stimulate a child’s sensory system.  Sensory activities, or re-centering activities, are the perfect way to help children get from a place of anxiousness to a place of regulation. These tools are often used with children who need to go through painful and stressful procedures.

The older sibling toolbox was designed to help children prepare for the arrival of a new baby. The arrival of a new baby brings many changes to a family, and sometimes older siblings have a hard time adjusting. Preparing your children for their younger sibling can help ease this transition. Makes a great gift for the expecting sibling from parents, friends, and family members.
