It’s that time of year again. Beautiful fall foliage covers the landscape. The crisp fall air begins to develop that deep winter bite. Excitement that surrounds the holidays begins to emerge. With all of the changes of seasons also emerges the dreaded head cold, flu, allergies, and congestion. With proper planning, prevention, and treatment options, you don’t have to let the winter blues take over your holidays.

The Common Head Cold

If your children are school-aged, you can expect them to come down with a head cold at least once this winter. Proliferated by a virus that involves an infection of the nose and throat, the common cold can last anywhere from a week to ten days. Children under the age of six are at the greatest risk of developing a cold, but adults usually suffer through two to three a year, as well. Since the common cold is caused by a virus, there is not common cure. However, pain relievers (Tylenol), nasal sprays (Dymista), and cough syrups can help alleviate symptoms.

Influenze A.K.A. “The Flu”

The flu is a respiratory illness that is contagious and can cause mild to severe illness. The influenza virus affects the throat, nose and lungs. Contrary to popular belief, the influenza virus does not generally cause stomach upset or vomiting. Individuals who contract influenza often experience high fevers, chills, body aches, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, and fatigue. However, your children may be spared from this illness by receiving an annual flu immunization. Staying away from individuals who have the flu and frequent hand washing can also help combat this illness, which frequently affects young children and older individuals.

Allergies and Congestion

The changing of seasons also brings about changes in our nasal passages. Excessive mucus is produced resulting in a runny nose while congestion creates a “stuffed up” feeling simultaneously. Utilizing a humidifier, nasal sprays and OTC allergy medications can provide relief. Be sure to stock up on these remedies prior to cold season to help your family prepare for seasonal allergies.

Keeping your kids healthy and strong is always a priority. However, keeping your kids from getting sick in the winter can be really hard. Luckily, there are tons of things you can do to help prevent the sniffles. Just be sure to follow these few steps to ensure your kids health.

Cozy up in the Cold

Winter weather is here in New York and my California blood is having a hard time coping. My toes and fingers go numb within a few minutes of exposure and I can’t seem to layer up enough to feel warm. Even our home is chilly, as it is nearly 100 years old and the insulation isn’t the best.

The mornings are the worst as I just want to stay in bed, but have to attend to the 2 1/2 and 6 year-old shouting “Mommy! Mommy, I want to watch a movie.” I peel myself away from my warm bed and make my way to the Keurig.

Knowing that we will be trapped indoors for the next few months, we have created ways to keep ourselves cozy and enjoy our time inside.

One of the things that we look forward to (especially my husband) is using our wood burning fireplace. The kids even help out with passing logs to the fire master.

We each have claimed a big, fuzzy couch blanket that we wrap up in, while we enjoy a book or movie.

Some of the perks with the cold weather is hot chocolate and fresh popped popcorn, endless Lego building, baking, dance parties and lots of snuggles with the kids and our pup.

What do you like to do during the cold months?
