Spotlight on Dose of Play

I am always excited to learn about new child life bloggers, as they tend to bring some great resources to readers. I’m sure many of you have heard of Dose of Play, but if not, then you are in for a treat.

Dawn Klausmeier is a Certified Child Life Specialist and mom of Olivia (3) and Rob (1). She resides with her children and husband in her hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dawn recently launched Dose of Play blog as a platform outside of the hospital walls for parents to find play inspiration, coping tips and resources to support children facing medical experiences.

In 2008, Dawn began her career at The Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in NYC where she worked on the general surgical unit and uniquely with the small bowel patient population. Dawn had an immediate interest in utilizing technology to help children cope in the medical setting. She presented with her colleagues to share how and why they were providing a distraction for medical procedures using the latest innovative digital tool: the iPad.

After moving back to the Midwest to start a family, Dawn returned to her internship site of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, but this time as an employee. She provided support throughout the 300+ bed hospital in different positions, though mainly the neurosurgical/pulmonary/solid organ transplant/trauma ICU; GI/pulmonary acute care unit; and surgical services department. Dawn is trained in critical-stress-incident-management where she co-facilitated debriefings for hospital employees.

Dawn has some amazing blog posts and giveaways too. Be sure to check out some of her latest posts on syringe play and preparing young children for the dentist using play. You can also stay connected through Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
